The Raccos met with Mayor, Mr. Yona Yahav in his office and had an informal city tour with Maya Goldenberg Executive Director of the Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation.
Mayor Yahav informed the Raccos of the city's current developments which include the Port City Campus project, the continuing development of Haifa's Hi-Tech International Park, the biggest in Israel. As well, he told them that Haifa has the world’s second largest development of start-up companies, second only to the US. As well Mayor Yahav told them of Israel's Government resolution which came out in January 2007 which gives Haifa reduced taxation for industry, hi-tech and tourism under the law of capital investments encouragement. Mayor Yahav showed the Raccos that people in Haifa represent the future model of peace in the Middle East. They live, the Mayor said, in peace and harmony for the last 100 years between Jews and Arabs, Christians and Muslims, Baha’is, Druze and Ah'madians.
Touring the city later on with Maya Goldenberg the Raccos visited the German Colony Boulevard, the Baha’i Gardens view, the Louie Promenade on top of the Carmel mountain looking over the Mediterranean , Beit Hagefen Jewish -Arab community center and Haifa’s beautiful shorelines. In Beit Hagefen they met with the director, Haney Halfer, who shared their long tradition of educational activities promoting co-existence and tolerance between Jews and Arabs of all ages.
Following this trip, Councillor Sandra Racco initiated an article in the February edition of the Vaughan Weekly entitled "Could Vaughan learn from Haifa?" Hopefully as suggested in the Article Vaughan and Haifa will twin in the near future as multiculturalism connects both cities which are much alike. The people of Haifa and their Canadian friends are very proud of this initiative.
Minister of Water stewardship Christine Melnick of the province of Manitoba took the time during her visit to Israel in January 2007, to learn about Haifa's long history and tradition of peace and co-existence. The visit was coordinated by the Consul General of Israel to Toronto Ya'akov Brosh, and Maya Goldenberg Executive Director of the Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation.
Minister Melnick tasted some of Haifa's unique flavor during her meeting with representatives of the multi cultural and multi-ethnical population. Minister Melnick met with representatives of the Jewish community, the Arab Community, the Baha’i faith, the Ah'madians as well as officials of the Haifa Municipality water department.

Dear Friends,
During these painful days for the State of Israel, please allow me to share with you my thoughts and actions concerning the situation in Israel generally and in Haifa specifically.
It is a challenging time for the people of Israel and the Middle East. For the last eleven days, the home of the more than one million Israeli citizens of northern Israel has become a home front under rocket barrage. Tragically, Haifa is in the range of Hezbollah's missiles. As my very own elderly parents, who are Holocaust survivors, live on Mount Carmel, I can tell you first hand -- it is not easy!
I was born and have lived all my life in Haifa. Missiles of hate and violence striking at the heart of our city of coexistence can only energize Haifa's spirit and intensify her
strength! No missile will break our people's determination to sustain the peace and
tolerance that have characterized Haifa's social fabric for more than 100 years. Jews and Arabs, Christians and Muslims, Bahá'is and Druze and Ahmedians have lived in Haifa for more than 100 years (!) with mutual respect and tolerance. All of Haifa's friends and supporters can be proud of this!
On Friday (July 21st), I called the Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation to an urgent meeting with the Consul General of Israel to Toronto, Mr. Ya'acov (Cobi) Brosh. We held a conference call with the Mayor of Haifa, Yona Yahav. He told us that the city is practically shut down -- businesses, restaurants, banks, trains and buses, the universities, municipal summer activities including day camps, etc. It is very painful. On Friday alone, Haifa absorbed 17 (!) direct rocket strikes. The neighborhood in Haifa where I was born and grew up also absorbed a direct rocket strike. It tears my heart…. My powers of logic refuse to understand!
I have been asked by Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav to raise funds for activating summer day camps in the bomb shelters as children are on summer vacation now. Please consider supporting this cause, and please feel free to share this e-mail and information with friends and relatives. For more details, call or e-mail me. All donations are tax deductible, and any amount is greatly appreciated! It is within our ability to support several week-long summer day camps in the city shelters. Remember that at times like these, we are strong by virtue of our solidarity!
Please open the link at the bottom of this page in order to donate to our Emergency Appeal.
I welcome your other suggestions and ideas as to how we can support Haifa in this tough situation. You may contact me at any time. My contact information appears below.
My heart is with the people in Israel and in Haifa. Let's pray for the safety and peace of all innocent people in the region who are paying the price of brutal terror and endless hate. There is no doubt in my mind that peace will prevail!
I deeply thank the Bahá'i community in Canada for their concern and true support of
Israel!

Executive Director
