The Haifa Foundation (est. 1983) is a charitable non-profit organization in Israel, whose projects benefit from the support of friends around the globe. In Canada, it is represented by the Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation.
The Haifa Foundation mission is to advance educational, cultural, communal and environmental projects and to improve the quality of life for all of Haifa's residents. The Foundation serves children, youth, new immigrants, the elderly, the disadvantaged and the disabled; promotes expanded educational opportunities for every school child; nurtures Arab-Jewish coexistence; provides recreational and cultural facilities for the entire community; and protects and enhances the environment.
The Haifa Municipality faces many challenges. Friends of the Haifa Foundation in Israel and all over the world are lending a hand. We attribute great importance to the support of the Canadian community, very much appreciate your expressions of solidarity and partnership, and thank you for all your help.
In the early years of the State of Israel, before people owned telephones and long before the era of e-mails and the Internet, Israelis would say to their friends, "The light is on, the door is always open, the coffee is hot." Dear friends, come see our city and meet our people. Our light is always on for you, our doors are open and our coffee is always hot.
Cordially,
Yona Yahav
Born in Poland in the midst of the chaos, pain and injustice of the Second World War, Toby's early years were nothing short of a struggle for survival. The family's journey took them from Lodz to Israel and then to Canada, where finally they were able to live a normal life.
During those years, Toby's life mirrored that of her husband, Saul, and led to their eventual meeting in Toronto in 1955. Two years later they were married, and over the next several years their family grew with the births of their children David, Bernie, Janice and Joel.
As if raising four children and helping to develop the family business weren't enough, Toby also immersed herself in the Jewish community. She believed that in order for her life to be meaningful, she must give back to the community. She continues to live by this philosophy today.
Thirty-five years ago, Toby began her volunteer career by becoming involved with B'nai Brith, where she helped to organize fund raising events and start an Israel Bond Club, each of whose members contributed a nominal amount monthly; each month, one of the members would receive a $100.00 bond. Toby became Chair of Israel Bonds in the early 1970's, and in this capacity organized a major event at the Leah Posluns Theatre, whose star performer for the evening was none other than Golda Meir! Coincidence or providence?
Toby is a tireless supporter of countless charitable organizations in Canada and Israel, among them the Hospital for Sick Children, Baycrest; the Jewish National Fund; Mount Sinai Hospital; and State of Israel Bonds. Over the years, she has done everything from visiting the infirm or elderly in hospitals to delivering Meals on Wheels. She is currently President of Aid to Disabled Veterans of Israel - Beit Halochem Canada -- all it took was meeting one disabled IDF veteran, and Toby knew she had to help.
We are honoured by Toby Feldberg chairmanship of the Canadian Committee for the Haifa Foundation, whose work on behalf of the city and people of Haifa benefits from her leadership.
